"THE FAT AND THE THIN," or, to use the French title, "Le Ventre de Paris," is a story of life in and around those vast Central Markets which form a distinctive feature of modern Paris. Even the reader who has never crossed the Channel must have heard of the Parisian Halles, for much has been written about them, not only in English books on the French metropolis, but also in English newspapers, magazines, and reviews; so that few, I fancy, will commence the perusal of the present volume without having, at all events, some knowledge of its subject matter. The Paris markets form such a world of their own, and teem at certain hours of the day and night with such exuberance of life, that it was only natural they should attract the attention of a novelist like M. Zola, who, to use his own words, delights "in any subject in which vast masses of people can be shown in motion."

The Fat and the Thin Émile Zola 9781519222541 Books

One of my favorites. The exotic and immersive descriptions of Paris marketplaces are not to be missed, and to top it all off there's the astonishing "cheese symphony", where Zola gets down and dirty among cheeses. I love the excessive description and self-indulgent wallowing in reality. If you enjoy strong smells, al fresco dining, verbose descriptions of food and delving into the lives of ordinary people caught up against the backdrop of revolution, this book is for you.

Fantastic, pithy and wise journey through time; the development of cuisine and the reason we honor it.
i have never read a novel by Zola that i didn't love, this one is no different.
Zola covers a lot of ground in The Fat and the Thin, including politics, our relationship with food, and the way that people justify their actions to themselves. His descriptions of the Paris markets are extensive (like the markets themselves) and really capture the strong sensations, both pleasant and distasteful, that you still find today in open air markets. A wide range of people would enjoy this book.
I read Germinal and The Sleeper(s) and had an impression of Zola as being a far more simple and journalistic writer than is the case. Had to read him for Ph.D. Comps, so not an ideal way to do so. Impressed when I went back to him. Lovely book on greed, endless detail about food and selling it, and French politics and their barbarity.
Very good, not Zola at his best, but an easy, poetic read. Zola has a remarkable ability to describe Paris, the markets, the people that comes through in this book. For me, Zola is at his best when he is angry about something, such as the Dreyfus affair in Ja'Accuse (sp?) or Le Debacle (again sp?). But still a worthwhile read.
A visual feast of the Paris 19th century marketplace. Made me wish Les Halles were still in existence so I could go experience them as Zola did. Full of colorful characters and vivid descriptions of the endless variety of goods and raw conditions of a marketplace. You will smell the fish and taste the fresh berries and wretch at the filth. And, oh yes, there is a story here as well.
"The Fat and Thin" weaves France's mid-1800s culture and politics with strong personalities of the lower and middle classes. Zola's elaborate style stimulates all five of the reader's senses when describing scenes in a Paris that is not the clean and romanticized city that is so often portrayed. The writing assaults the readers senses as well as evoking sympathy for some characters and outrage at others. The last sentence in the book sums it all nicely. Read it!
